Tragédia do Mar is a monument located on Avenida da República in Matosinhos, near the beach. It was created by sculptor Joaquim Correia in memory of the 152 fishermen who lost their lives in a tragic shipwreck on December 2, 1947, when several fishing boats from the local fleet were caught in a storm. This tragedy deeply affected the Matosinhos community, and the monument stands as a permanent reminder of the loss. The sculpture depicts a group of female figures, representing the mothers, wives, and daughters of the fishermen, in states of grief and despair, looking out to sea for their loved ones who never returned.
